Our American Cousins
The Marklands and all their relatives - more than 100 of them - usually hold a summer reunion at Markland. This year (1963) it was postponed to coincide with the dedication of the Markland Dam, held on the Kentucky side of the River in Warsaw. At a reunion at Markland in 1958, the family decided to wage a battle to keep the family name on the new dam, then under construction. The Corps of Engineers was considering the name McAlpine. The family enlisted the aid of several congressman. With their support, it was decided to keep the name Markland on the dam and locks. When the locks at the Louisville dam were reconstructed, the name McAlpine was given to them. (Source: Cincinnati Post And Time Star, 10/11/1963). more
Our Scottish Ancestors
We are a Markland family living in Aotearoa - New Zealand. The surname Markland comes from a Scottish land measurement, the Merkland, based on the Merk coin used in Scotland in the 16th century. The name eventually migrated south to Lancashire in England where there are today still many Markland place names. Martland, Marland and Marsland are all variations of the name. We originally set up this site to give ourselves vanity email adresseses, so actual content may come and go as the mood takes us. Please be patient. more

Open Source Template
The templates distributed at OSWD each carry their own seperate open source license which is chosen by the designer when it is submitted to the site. When you download a template from them, you agree to use the template under its respective license. We chose to use this template when we set up this site as it loads quickly, uses valid XHTML 1.1 and CSS, and does not distract from the content we want to present. It makes use of the excellent icons available at FamFamFam. more
