26 December 2002

Copyright The Nelson Mail, 27 December 2002, by Lane Nichols:
Nelson teacher killed in crash: A Nelson woman has been killed and her husband airlifted to Christchurch Hospital following a motorcycle accident near Arthur's Pass. Helen Wesley Markland, 52, a teacher from Stoke, died when the motorcycle on which she was a pillion passenger collided with a truck and trailer unit near Otira at 9.50am on Thursday. Mrs Markland's death was one of six on the roads so far during the Christmas-New Year holiday period. The rest have been in the North Island. Senior Sergeant John Torrance, of the Greymouth police, said the Otira accident occurred on State Highway 73, when an empty logging truck travelling west braked suddenly before a one-way bridge. The truck's trailer unit swung out towards the oncoming traffic and collided with the Marklands' motorcycle, which was heading east. Mr Torrance said Mrs Markland died of her injuries at the scene. Her body was taken to Greymouth but then transferred to Christchurch. Her husband was flown by helicopter to Christchurch Hospital with serious arm injuries. A hospital spokeswoman today described 51-year-old Ian George Markland's condition as stable. The truck driver was uninjured but his truck was taken to Greymouth for examination. Mr Torrace said it took Hokitika police about one hour to reach the accident site, but highway patrol vehicles were in the area and were the first emergency services to reach the scene. The road was closed while the site was cleared and accident inspectors assessed the area.

Copyright The Press: Police have also yet to speak to the owner-operator of the Woodend-based logging truck involved in the Otira crash, but said he would be charged. Land Transport Safety Authority inspectors were in Greymouth yesterday to carry out tests on the truck and trailer unit. The motorcycle carrying Mr and Mrs Markland, formerly of the West Coast, had just crossed the Goat Creek bridge as the truck pulled up to give way. Police believe the slowing trailer unit swung out before coming to a standstill and knocked the pair off their bike. Mrs Markland died at the scene.
