Visit To Markland Indianna
December 29, 1996: The town of Markland consists of two roads, Markland Town Road and Benedict Road. Access to both roads is off Rt 156. There are but a few older homes, some trailer homes and the Markland Baptist Church existing in the town. There is a an unnamed cemetery east of town on Rt 156 adjacent to the Markland Dam Park. Located in this cemetery are the graves of Charles, his wife Rhoda and their daughters Emma Scudder and Viola Kincaid. Just west of town is Markland Pike Road leading north into the county following a small creek. (Source: Karen Kiefel).
Viking discovery of America
The vikings discovered America about 1000 AD. roughly 500 years before Columbus first visited. Their sagas name three distinct land masses, Helluland - Flat Slab Land named for the flat stones found there, Vinland - Vine Land taking its name from the grape vines they found while walking through it, and Markland - Forest Land, named for its vast forest coverings. Helluland is probably modern day Baffin Island, while Markland is probably southern Labrador, and Vinland is north America.
Matthew Markland USA
Extracted from 'A Markland Family & Some Allied Lines' by Caroline Carpenter: Will probated in 1751 in Frederick County, MD. Son Jonathan was executor. Children named in his will in 1744 were Matthew, Jonathan, Mary Garland and Margaret Reed and Thomas and Michael Jones (Margaret's children from her first marriage).
Matthew was a cooper. First record was in 1710 in Prince Geroge County, MD. A Charles Markland first appears in 1722, died by April 16, 1741. He (Charles or Matthew) has many descendants and may be the progenitor of the eastern Marklands. Matthew could be the brother of Charles but it has not been proven.
The first record found of the Markland Family is in an old English book in the Cincinnati Library. They were spoken ofg as landowners in England in 1327. One was Ricardus de Markland and a little later there was a Johannes de Markland. German names for Richard and Jonathan, both family names found in the Markland Ancestry in the US. The family was of some importance as it had a coat of arms, a creat and a motto. The motto was "Marte et Arts", latin for "By war and art". That indicates we are descemded from warriors and also from lovers of books, music and paintings.
This English book includes several generations of the family, dating from Ricardus de Markland of 1327 to about 400 years later when the first Markland must have come to America. Sprinkled throughout the families, recorded in England from 1327 to 1700, were names still used in the Markland Family in the US: Edward, James, Thomas, John, William, Matthew, Elizabeth, Margaret, Anne, Catherine, and Ellen. The men were doctors, barristers (lawyers), iron-mongers, soldiers showing that they belonged to a good class of people.
Exactly who and when the first Markland came to America is unkown. The first known record was of a John, son of John Markland and buried in MD, Mar 31, 1678. He was a land owner and a slave owner. Then in 1751, in Frederick County, MD, there is a will on file of a Margaret Markland. Mentioned in the will is a son, Jonathan and he could have been the Jonathan who died in Boone County, KY in 1800. From the period 1751 to 1785, there is no reocrd of our Jonathan in MD but, as families did in those times, he probably started west, for there is a record in Wheeling, WV of deeds and land surveys showing that Jonathan acquired land in 1785 and sold it in 1794.
